Middle school math in San Mateo-Foster City
Since spring 2021, the district has had one mixed-ability Math 6 for every sixth grader, followed by Math 7 and Math 8. Beyond that it publishes three middle school pathways: Algebra in high school, which the district describes as the path for most students; Algebra in eighth grade as a double period; and Algebra in eighth grade as a single period. The most recent pathways document we could find is for 2025-26, so confirm this year's details with the school.
The double-period route puts Algebra alongside Math 8 in the same year, so a student finishes eighth-grade math and high school Algebra together. It is based on interest and preparedness rather than a test. Families tell the school by the middle of seventh grade, and the district suggests starting with the teacher and counselor.
The single-period route skips Math 8 content by passing three Math 7 proficiency assessments: proportional relationships, percents and probability; expressions, equations, inequalities and rational-number arithmetic; and circles, angles, triangles and prisms. The document lays out a January sign-up and testing cycles from February to early April. Its English and Spanish versions give different dates for results, so ask the school for this year's calendar.
Algebra enrollment in the district grew from 172 students to 389 over three years, to 2024-25. More students are taking Algebra than before, which makes the foundation under it matter.

From eighth grade to San Mateo High, Aragon and Hillsdale
The high schools handle math differently. Aragon has a compressed sequence that covers three years of math in two, entered by a March exam and other criteria. The details are on our Hillsborough math page, and the district links Aragon's current exam dates. Aragon's default path is Algebra 1 in eighth grade, then Geometry in ninth.
San Mateo High has no compressed sequence. Its counseling page says the district offers no acceleration except a summer Geometry program for rising tenth graders, taught by a district teacher. A student who takes an outside course must submit a transcript by the Friday before school starts, and the school gives no guidance or pre-approval for summer acceleration. Tenth graders can take Geometry and Algebra 2 at the same time.
Hillsdale publishes its math courses, from Algebra 1 and Geometry through AP Calculus BC and AP Statistics. We could not find a published acceleration or placement process, so ask the counselor.
Across the district, the math department says colleges require a minimum of Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2 with grades of C or better. Borel posts the district's enrollment dates for eighth graders: priority enrollment runs from December 1, 2026 to February 5, 2027.

What San Mateo High expects
San Mateo High lists the grades it expects before each course, which shows where a shaky year can cost a student later:
- Geometry: a C or better in Algebra 1 is strongly recommended.
- AP Calculus AB: a C or better in Precalculus.
- AP Calculus BC: a C or better in AB, or an A+ in Precalculus.
- AP Statistics: a B or better in Algebra 2, or a C or better in Precalculus.
The course list also includes Finite Math and Statistics, Principles of Computer Science and AP Computer Science A.

How we work with San Mateo students
We start from your student's own course, teacher and what is due this week, and from the middle school course before it. If the question is whether to pursue Algebra in eighth grade, we look at where your student is in Math 7 and tell you honestly what we see. We never promise a placement or a score. Those decisions belong to the school, and we will tell you honestly what we see.

Questions from San Mateo families
How does my child get Algebra in eighth grade?
There are two routes. The double-period route is based on interest and preparedness, and families tell the school by the middle of seventh grade. The single-period route requires passing three Math 7 proficiency assessments. Ask your child's teacher and counselor for this year's calendar.
Does Algebra in eighth grade put my child on Aragon's fast track?
No. At Aragon, Algebra 1 in eighth grade leads to Geometry in ninth. Compressed Math is a separate placement, entered through an exam and other criteria.
Can a summer course get my child a level up?
Not reliably. Aragon does not recommend summer courses for acceleration, and San Mateo High gives no guidance or pre-approval for them. Ask the school before you pay for one.
Which high school will my child attend?
The district decides, and the dates for eighth graders are posted on your middle school's eighth-grade page. We work from your student's own course whichever school it is.
Do you come to our home in San Mateo?
Yes. Sessions happen at your kitchen table or your student's desk anywhere in San Mateo, or online if that suits your family better. Many families mix the two.
What does math tutoring in San Mateo cost?
A Membership is $275 a week in your home or $215 online, for a weekly 60-minute session. Commit through the end of the term and it is $260 or $200 a week; pay-as-you-go Flex is $300 or $240 a session. Every price and term is on the pricing page.
